Citizens for Euclid Square Mall

Euclid, Ohio, 1973.

It's short and to the point: Citizens for Euclid Square Mall. And it existed as a group that fought for the installation of the now long-gone Euclid Square mall. They were battling Carl Milstein and Milton Roemisch who really REALLY poo-pooed the whole idea.

The Euclidites also had a winning vote on their side: 12,976 votes in favor of the mall and 6,648 against.

I wonder how residents and the governing body would have felt if they knew that in 25 years time, the last major anchor would be pulling out and leaving behind a husk that would sit, sucking down space for another 20 years. Would they have voted differently? If so, what would have come of the land that no longer had a purpose?

Most likely, the mall existing paved the way for the Amazon fulfillment center to go in, which I know isn't everyone's cup of tea, but perhaps we can all agree, is better than what ESM was from 1998 on.

So enjoy a simpler yet uncannily familiar time when people had very definite opinions about what should or should not be built at 1155 Babbitt Road.
