Pre-1900's Euclid: 780 East 250th Street

Euclid has a wide variety of housing stock. Take a drive up and down a few streets and you'll see it change in size, style, and decade several times over.

The population in Euclid jumped considerably between 1920 and 1930, the population nearly quadrupling (3,363 people in 1920 compared to 12,751 in 1930) and again, in 1940 through 1950, going from 17,866 to roughly 41,396.

Myself, I live in a 1940's era cape cod, and across the street and a block over, the houses are 1960's bungalows. And whilst there is plenty of variety, it is within those decades of growth that most of our homes were erected.

This entry and this home will be the first in a series of homes that have withstood time and hundreds of chilly winters and still stand today in Euclid. Pre-1900's Euclid. Enjoy.

780 East 250th Street

In 1874, Henry Devoe (b. abt. 1841) owned the parcel that is now 780 East 250th street, along with a large chunk of the area around it. He was a farmer and had a wife, Sarah E. Devoe (nee Snyder, b. abt. 1850), and two children; Frank E. Devoe (b. 1872) and Mina Augusta Devoe (b. 1874).

Henry L. Devoe circa God knows.

When the home was built in 1875, East 250th street was known as Johnson Road. The Devoe family would live on Johnson Road for more than 45 years. In the 1920 census, Henry and Sarah are there as well as the household of Frank E. Devoe and wife Murta E., and their daughter Geraldine (b. 1904).

It's unclear what happened with the property, ownership-wise, over the next 8 years. On September 7th 1928, it was sold by Sheriff E. Hanratty to Joseph L. Abrams. Abrams had the deed for six whole days before it changed hands again, on September 13th, 1928, to a husband and wife by the names of Gustav and Louisa Herbarth.

Louisa passed away in 1951, Gustav 1953. The house is purchased by another husband and wife, John and Agnes Draheim. They own the house from May 25, 1955 until July 15, 1959.

Robert and Mary Anderson take possession of the property but the house is out of their names on December 14, 1960.

The next and second to most recent owners stayed from 1960 until May of 2001. The main house turns 100 in 1975.

The house is currently owned by an LLC.

The real growth explosion of neighboring homes would have been most evident while the Herbarths owned it.

The county says the effective build date is 1956, which is when the obvious addition may have been added. The present garage was built in 2006.

The basement is 442 square feet, as is living area 1. Living area 2 is 1,141 square feet. This is how the additions and decks were added onto the very small original structure:

I'm not sure if the house is used as a rental today. It could be. At any rate, here's some photos of the interior and a couple of the outside from an old real estate listing.
Original portion of the house is to the left. Notice the funny placement of windows?

Added on kitchen.

Original.

Left is the addition, background is original.
This year will mark 141 years standing. Impressive.

  2. Henry looks like he's reaching for his gun in that photo. Some people don't like to have their picture taken.
