History Lesson: Euclid Aldi Part III: Bing's Furniture Store

History Lesson: Euclid Aldi Part I: Butler Bros Burr's Department Store
History Lesson: Euclid Aldi Part II: Shott's Dept. Store

After the rather expeditious departures of Butler Bros., Scott's and Shott's, Bing was announced in January of 1958 that they would be opening a furniture store at 22300 Lakeshore Blvd. in April of the same year.
Bing was a big name in the Cleveland area. From the Encyclopedia of Cleveland History:
The BING CO. was one of Ohio's largest furniture stores. Louis S. Bing and Elias Nathan opened a retail furniture store 24 Mar. 1891, on Seneca (W. 3rd) St. in Cleveland's retail trading center with 10 employees. The partnership lasted only a few years, and by 1895 Bing had bought out Nathan's interest, continuing business under his own name until the early 1900s when his younger brother, Sol, became a junior partner. They operated as Louis S. Bing and Bros. until 1913 when the firm incorporated as The Bing Company. In 1907, increased business forced the first move, to 522 Prospect Avenue in what would later become the center of Cleveland's furniture store district. By 1922, both Louis and Sol had passed away and Louis's son-in-law, Jay M. Halle, and son, Louis S. Bing, Jr., assumed ownership and management of the company, becoming the youngest furniture executives in the country. In 1929, The Bing Co. opened a new 10-story store at 514 Prospect Ave., offering a full assortment of household goods and home service departments and fulfilling the company's slogan of selling "Everything for the Home." By 1935, The Bing Co. had furnished 100,000 homes in the area and within a decade had undertaken its branch store expansion program. In order to serve customers throughout northern Ohio, they opened their first branch stores in Shelby in April 1945 and in Mansfield and Tiffin in 1946. By 1960 Bing's had a total of 14 furniture stores, including 5 in the Greater Cleveland area.
The next year the company was sold to interests controlled by the Schottenstein Bros. of Columbus. All of the Bing stores in Cleveland were closed Sept. 1961 and their stock liquidated, except for the store at 22300 Lake Shore Blvd. in Euclid, which was bought by Louis Bing's grandson, George (son of Louis S. Bing, Jr.), who continued to operate it as The George. L. Bing Furniture Co. until 1976.

Once whittled down to one location, it was called the "new" Bing's and later "Bing's Suburbia".

Here's a January 1977 auction advert, Bing's store liquidates while 2 months and a couple miles down the road, the Euclid Square Mall prepares for it's anticipated opening day.

History Lesson: Euclid Aldi Part I: Butler Bros Burr's Department Store

In late 1955 a store called Shott's Department Store was in the 22300 Lakeshore Blvd. location. This would have left the unit vacant for under 2 months, if at all!

Were they an offshoot of Butler Bros.? I'm not sure, although this would make me think they were:

Regardless, they did have some interesting drama that November:

Those are some ambitious thieves... a 1500 lb. safe? I guess it didn't do too much to hurt business, because 11 days later they were just freaking giving Thanksgiving turkeys away.

November was a bad month for Shott's Department Store, because just two years later in November 1957 they started running their going out of business ads.

October 6 1955 - January 25 1958.

I guess they gave it their best Shott.

History Lesson: Euclid Aldi Part I: Butler Bros Burr's Department Store

One of the busiest shops in the Shore Center Shopping Center is the Aldi grocery store that moved in in 2010. Located at 22300 Lakeshore Blvd., it's been happily thriving for 4 years, so let's take a step back in time and see what else used to call this storefront home.

Aldi, 22300 Lakeshore Blvd., Euclid, Ohio 44123
The first store to ever reside at 22300 Lakeshore Blvd. was Burr's Department Store.

There was much ceremony and even a ribbon cutting around the grand opening of Burr's. They also had a second location located at 16700 Lorain Ave. in Cleveland.

By 1951 the store was referred to as Scott-Burrs, a Butler Brothers Store. A few months later, it was simply being called Butler Bros.

Butler Brothers was a retailer and wholesale supplier based in Chicago. It was founded in 1877 as a mail-order company by George H. Butler and Edward Burgess Butler. In the 1920s, Butler Brothers moved into retailing with a chain of "Scott" and "L. C. Burr" stores.
Here's a want ad for a shoe salesman. Notice that it's care of Butler Bros. Ad is posted June 20, 1955.

And on June 23, 1955, They take out a full page "going out of business" ad.

1948-1955. But was that really it for the Butler Bros. store in Euclid?

Merkel Family Home to The Lakeshore Shopping Center - 1945

The planning of the Lakeshore shopping center began in 1945. It's near the corner of Babbitt and East 222nd St.

In 1945 plans were made to build a shopping center at Lakeshore Blvd. The land was owned by the Merkel family for many years. Wilbur Merkel was the real estate investor for the shopping center. The land was valued at $750,000. The plans in 1945 were to build 26 stores. Parking was for 350 cars. The Merkel family home had recently been demolished in 1945.

The first Department Store that opened in the shopping center was the Burr Department Store in 1948. On the left was W.M.Mullen, Assistant manager and on the right, W.C Croswell, Manager.

The Grand opening of the store was a big event. Mayor Sims was to cut the ribbon for the opening. Dale Harper and the Euclid High marching band was to perform. The Grand Opening ran from May 22nd to May 29th, 1948. Two "Grand Awards" were given out, an RCA Radio and a two-piece living room set.

One of the first restaurants in the shopping plaza was a Howard Johnson's in 1947. It was later replaced by the Tasty Shop and then Charlites.

This picture from the 1955 Euclid High yearbook shows the Tasty Shop, Fisher Foods and Krogers, which were grocery stores. This was around Christmas Time.

This is the August 2014 view with Aldi's, Radio Shack, H.R Block and Subway. The Center is now known as Shore Center Shopping Center.
