Marc's Shore Center Then & Now 22830 & 22840 Lakeshore Blvd

marc's shore center than and now
This is part 1 in a series, E. 228th & Lakeshore Shopping Center.

What was Marc's near Shore Center before it was Marc's? Marc's address is 22840 Lakeshore Blvd., Euclid, Ohio. Expansion over time meant that Marc's is also 22830 Lakeshore Blvd. I assume 22830 was absorbed in the late 1990s.

The section of the building facing Lakeshore boulevard was built in 1952. It was later added onto in the 1960s.

July 6, 1952 - 22840

Foodtown, Inc. is open for business, and looking to hire meat cutters. Since the building was new, so was everything inside of it. 28400 Lakeshore Blvd. also boasted air conditioning.

December 11, 1955 - 22830

Woolworth is open to the right of Foodtown just in time for Christmas 1955 with a remodeled store that includes a small animals and a lunch counter.

August 6, 1959 - 22840

Now Open!  22840 Lakeshore blvd. has become a Pick-N-Pay. It was one of nine stores that opened at this time, and this one was advertised as being near Bailey's.

April 28, 1960 - 22840

8 months later, on April 28, 1960, 22840 Lakeshore is now operating as a Super Valu store, along with 25 other locations in the Cleveland area.

April 11, 1963 - 22840

Nearly three years later, the future Marc's store is relaunching again as Fazio's Stop-N-Shop. It was between this time and 1970 that the footprint of the store was elongated north to south substantially.

May 12, 1981 - 22840

Fazio's Stop-N-Shop/Supermarket has almost a twenty year run at 22840 Lakeshore boulevard before making the slight transition to a Fazio's $ave-it discount food store.

December 2, 1982 - 22840

$ave-it Discount food lasted about 19 months. In December 1982, the store would re-brand to Lakeshore Foods, Too.

May 12, 1985 - 22840

Lakeshore Foods, Too became Food Basket. Kenneth Holzheimer owned 22840 Lakeshore, along with another at 26588 Lakeshore Blvd. in Euclid and 9193 Chillicothe Rd. in Kirtland.

May 10, 1987 - 22840

The dedicated grocery stranglehold is over. For the first time in the building's existence, it is something other than strictly a grocery store. Bernie Shulman's moves in, which will with all other locations, become Marc's by the end of 1992.

October 15, 1993 - 22830

The Lakeshore boulevard Woolworth store is included with 400 others across the country that are officially being closed as Woolworth attempts a restructuring plan.
