Euclid Red Lobster (1278 E 260th St) Sold

So the Euclid Red Lobster at 1278 East 260th Street has been sold for $250,000 to an entity called AFE EUCLID LLC. To me this looks like it may be the name of an agent. It traces back to an attorney in Cleveland by the name of Ann Marie Hawkins.

Louis J. H. Schmand: The Euclid Tragedy

Indulge me, because this has nothing to do with buildings or development and it's certainly not news, but it is intriguing. I hope you'll agree.

Sunday, April 29th, 1877, some locals were out having a walk when they spotted an object near the roots of a maple tree on a ravine on S.W. Dille's property. Upon closer inspection, it was revealed to be a dead body.

Euclid Square Mall: House of Horrors

Halloween will be here in a little over two months. A thread on Facebook jogged a memory of a newspaper clipping loose that I wanted to post in either this blog or my Euclid Boo blog around Halloween.

It's a short piece advertising thrills at the Euclid Square Mall HOUSE OF HORRORS! Open Every night during the last week of October, 1978. A balloon-headed phantom leers at the camera frozen in time. Fun for the whole family, but the little ones should probably bring a parent along.

A couple dollars got you a few fun, cheap screams. I am certain to this day there is a memory of something that seemed truly terrible to a young kid still floating around in the darkness of a grown man's mind.

Euclid Square Mall: New Home to The Euclid Beach Boys Event Center & Museum

Here's a cool bit of news: The Euclid Beach Boys Event Center and Museum has announced their grand opening, complete with the Original Frozen Whip custard, at Euclid Square mall.

Faithful readers know what a mall softie I am, so add historical memorabilia from not only Euclid Beach but also Geauga Lake and Chippewa Lake parks PLUS custard and you've got the makings of something awesome.

Joe Tomaro and John Frato make up the Euclid Beach Boys, and they've been collecting for over 35 years. The event center looks beautiful and I'm eager to see everything from their collection they are going to display.

The event is happening June 13th, 1 - 5 PM. Tickets are required. You can visit their Facebook for more information.

Wondering what old storefront the Euclid Beach Boys are in at Euclid Square Mall?

EPIC Freaking Photos of Euclid Square Mall Circa 1976-1977

When I started the Dead Euclid blog in 2005, it was because I was so fascinated/disgusted with the status of Euclid Square Mall. The blog has spun off into a couple different directions, finally landing here. I'd like to think this is a history/future of Euclid, Ohio, more than anything else.

I opened with those thoughts because I found something that has me as excited as an 8 year old going to Geauga Lake!

Pictures, glorious pictures of BEFORE the mall was built, and after... filled with people and promise.

Enjoy, and thanks to the Cleveland Memory Project and the generous donors and volunteers who are constantly adding to this invaluable resource!

Hey Wayne Poe! A few years ago Mr. Poe contacted me because I had published a want ad for a secretary from 1976. We meet again!

And if I remember right, Warren Goodwin was a Euclid Police captain.

Seeing these so crystal clear, it makes it somehow even more lonely to walk through the mall now. Even when the place has kids running around and churches in session, nothing seems like it belongs, nothing feels as natural as these photos do.

486 Euclid Square Mall

Unit 486 in Euclid Square Mall was right to your left when you entered the mall through the South East entrance. In 1977 it was a Beef Corral restaurant, and it opened with Euclid Square Mall.

Euclid is Beef Corral country! Beef as far as the eye can see!

In late 1984, Beef Corral was out, and the location was opened as an Arby's roast beef fast food restaurant.

I don't know when Arby's in Euclid Square Mall closed. I do know it has indeed been vacant and closed since at least 2004.The below photos of Beef Corral/Arby's at 486 Euclid Square Mall taken by me in Spring 2015.

Lake Shore Coffee House Cash Mob - Saturday April 25, 2015

We stopped up to Lake Shore Coffee House on Saturday, April 25th. This was the first cash mob event in Euclid. I've been to Lake Shore Coffee House a couple of times and I gotta tell ya, get the mocha, you will not be sorry!

While I took photos we also chatted with the owner of the coffee house, Greg Lawrence. Not only does he brew delicious coffee, but he also makes a coffee-beer hybrid called Twisted Turtle.

Greg told us that this morning, the line was six people deep, "Just like the old days," he recalled.

My sincere hope is that things like Great Scott really spur regular, and very much deserved business towards the Lake Shore Coffee House, which has been in Euclid for almost 23 years.

History Lesson: B&B Appliance - 24470 Lakeland Blvd - Uncle Bill's

Today, 24470 Lakeland Blvd. is home to B&B appliance. Much to my surprise, B&B has been at this location for almost 50 years, since 1967.

24470 Lakeland Blvd., Euclid Ohio
From the late 1950's until late 1966 or early 1967 this store was home to Uncle Bill's. Remember them? I'm about to expose my Lake county upbringing and my age. I don't actually remember Uncle Bill's, but I remember my parents talking about how the Shoregate location went from an Uncle Bill's to Cooks.

October 15 1959

Remember when this was an Uncle Bill's? This location did not obviously become a Cooks.

Sidney Axelrod

Uncle Bill's was formed by Sidney Axelrod in 1955. The Lakeland location was in place by 1959.

A little trivia - who is Uncle Bill? He was William Melvin, uncle to founder Sidney Axelrod. He wanted a way to invest his money from a business he'd recently sold, so he gave $40,000 to Axelrod, and with it, Axelrod opened the location on Brookpark Road.

The company was sold to Cook Coffee Co. in 1961. Cook was founded in 1921 by Max Freeman and Hyman C. Broder, and also owned Pick-n-Pay and Foodtown, amongst others.

While the Euclid Uncle Bill's was out by 1967, Cook Coffee Co. went on to become Cook United, Inc. It faced many hardships in the 1970's and first half of the 1980's. They filed Chapter 11 in 1984 and by mid-1987, closed their last 4 Cleveland stores.

Euclid Avenue circa 1973

Today there was an article with lots of photos posted on Cleveland.com called Cleveland in the 1970s: A gritty city survives turbulent times.

In towards the end is a picture of Euclid Avenue looking East. Check out all the signage that used to be!

Blizzard of 1978

On January 25 1978 it was a mild day. Highs were in the 40's with some fog. The weather forecast for January 26 1978 was a normal January day with High's in the low 30's with some snow. The weather was to be much worse than expected.

On January 25th, a low pressure area in Louisiana formed. It then moved north late on the 25th and combined with a another low pressure area and cold air over the Great Lakes. The storm merged over Southern Ohio. The National Weather service was not able to pinpoint the forecast for Cleveland until 10 p.m. A blizzard warning was then issued

The storm first hit Cincinnati and then Columbus. At 4 a.m the storm passed over Cleveland. The temperature was 44 degrees by 6 am, the temperature had dropped to 14 degrees. The barometer dropped to 28.28 which is still a record to this day. The winds at Hopkins gusted to 82 mph. A wind gust of 103 mph was recorded at the water intake plant in Lake Erie. The J Burton Ayers, an iron ore ship, battled gusts near 111 mph. Snow and wind knocked out power to tens of thousands in the Cleveland area and around Ohio.

In Euclid, 8,000 people lost power. Emergency Centers were set up at Euclid Square Mall, Briardale Community Center and some local schools. Police helped 33 stranded motorists and 60 cars were towed after they got stuck.Winds tore off a canopy on East 266th.

In Cleveland 1000 people were in emergency shelters due to blizzard conditions. Northwest Ohio was even harder hit with people trapped on the Ohio turnpike. Radio stations in the area interrupted regular programming for news reports on the blizzard.

On the evening of January 26, Governor James Rhodes called out the National Guard. They rescued people that were stranded on the Ohio Turnpike. Rhodes also asked for four wheel drive vehicles to find stranded people on the highway. Airports around the state of Ohio were closed.

The blizzard wound down by the evening of January 27th. By the 28th the blizzard had ended. Schools were closed into the next week. Cleveland ended up with only 7.1 inches of snow. In northwestern Ohio helicopters brought in supplies and brought people to hospitals. Roads were still clogged due to the blowing and drifting snow into the following week. The state hired outside contractors to clear the roads. 51 people were killed during the storm. Agricultural loses totaled 73 million dollars due to the storm.
